Relief for parched New Gurgaon soon

High-lying areas of the city, especially the New Gurgaon localities, which are parched during the summer every year, are likely to get substantial relief by July-end.

Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda), the agency responsible for water supply in New Gurgaon areas, has recently floated a tender to install three water boosters in the pipelines to maintain desirable water pressure so that water reaches the high-lying localities.

“The boosters will be installed at three strategic locations at the cost of Rs. 1 crore,” said Kartar Singh, executive engineer, Huda divison-3. The three locations would be near Paras Hospital in Sushant Lok (Phase 1), at Sector 15 and at Sector 5.

Besides Sushant Lok, the booster to be installed near Paras Hospital will benefit areas like DLF City Phase 4 and 5.
Similarly, the one to be installed at Sector 15 will benefit sectors 31, 32, 39, 40, 46 and 51. The booster in Sector 5 will bring relief to areas like Palam Vihar, sectors 2, 22, 23, 23A and the nearby areas.

The water boosters were slated to be installed by May, in view of the peak summer season, but the authority took time in floating the tender.

Nearly 70% of the city’s water requirement is met by tubewells and the remaining by canals maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.

To augment water supply in New Gurgaon areas, Huda also set up a 2-km-long and 1,200-mm-wide water pipeline at the Sector 16 boosting station.

New Gurgaon localities like DLF City, South City, Ardee City, Sushant Lok and others face acute water crisis every summer.

Frequent protests by residents against water shortage and defunct supply lines are quite common in the Millennium City. Residents hope the water boosters will ease the perennial problem of low water pressure.
